Tax Debt Relief

If you owe more than you can pay, there are options. The right one depends on your specific financial situation. We will review your account, identify all your options, build the best case for you, and negotiate with the IRS on your behalf

Audits & Audit Reconsideration

An IRS audit can arrive as a simple mailed request or as a full in-person examination of your finances. We represent you before the IRS and protect your rights through the process. If you disagree with a previous audit result, we may be able to pursue audit reconsideration.

Tax Liens

A federal tax lien is the governments legal claim against your current AND future property when you have unpaid tax debt. This includes your home, vehicles, business assets, investment accounts, retirement accounts, and life insurance. Unlike a levy, a lien doesn’t actually take your property; it simply secures the governments interest and gives it priority over most other creditors. Once filed, a Notice of Federal Tax Lien becomes part of public record, which can damage your credit and make it difficult to sell property, refinance, or obtain new financing. Liens generally remain in place until the tax debt is paid in full, or resolved through other options. We help you to understand your lien, address the underlying tax debt, and explore resolution options to protect your assets.

Levies & Seizures

An IRS levy is the government's legal seizure of your property or income to satisfy unpaid tax debt — different from a lien, which just secures the debt, a levy actually takes it. If you've received a Notice of Intent to Levy, you typically have a limited window to act before the IRS proceeds, so prompt professional help can make the difference between negotiating a resolution and losing access to your income or assets. We will work for you to stop the levy and address the underlying tax debt. Here are the main types that could affect you:

  • Wage Garnishment (Wage Levy): The IRS contacts your employer directly and requires them to withhold a large portion of your paycheck, sending it straight to the IRS until the debt is paid or released.
  • Bank Levy: The IRS freezes and seizes funds directly from your bank account. Unlike a wage garnishment, this is typically a one-time grab of whatever is in the account on that day, though the IRS can issue additional bank levies later.
  • Property Seizure: In more severe cases, the IRS can seize and sell physical assets, such as real estate, vehicles, or business equipment, to satisfy the debt.
  • Federal Payment Levy Program: The IRS can intercept certain federal payments owed to you, including Social Security benefits, federal contractor payments, and tax refunds.
  • 1099 Levy (Accounts Receivable Levy): For self-employed individuals and business owners, the IRS can levy payments owed to you by clients or customers before they ever reach your hands.
Unfiled & Back Tax Returns

If you have years of unfiled returns, we can help you get into compliance, minimize your exposure, and work with the IRS on your behalf towards a resolution. Getting current is often the first step towards a payment plan or settlement.

Offer in Compromise

An Offer in Compromise allows eligible taxpayers to settle their tax debt for less than the full amount owed. Qualified individuals must meet the IRS’s Reasonable Collection Potential (RCP) guidelines.

Payment Plans & Installment Agreements

If you can’t pay your balance in full, the IRS offers payment plans – including options that don’t require disclosing your full financial picture. We help you structure a plan that works within your budget and protects your rights.

Currently Non Collectible Status

If you are unable to pay anything at all right now, you may qualify for Currently Non Collectible (CNC) status – where the IRS temporarily suspends collection activity on your account. We help you apply and maintain that status.

Appeals & Dispute Resolution

If you disagree with an IRS decision — whether it's a proposed audit adjustment, a rejected offer in compromise, a lien or levy action, or a penalty assessment — you have the right to challenge it through the IRS Office of Appeals, an independent division separate from the office that made the original decision. Our team represents you throughout this process, building a well-documented case and negotiating directly with Appeals officers to reach a fair resolution. We handle the full range of appeal types, including Collection Due Process (CDP) hearings, penalty abatement appeals, audit reconsiderations, and offer in compromise appeals, each with its own strict deadlines and procedural requirements. Because appeal rights are time-sensitive and easy to forfeit if deadlines are missed, we act quickly to preserve your rights and position your case for the best possible outcome.

Penalty Abatement

IRS penalties can add up fast. In many cases, penalties can be reduced or removed if you meet certain requirements. Additionally, while the IRS does not generally reduce or remove interest charges, if we find the IRS made a calculation error, we may be able to request the IRS remove the erroneous interest charges.

Innocent Spouse Relief

If you file Married Filing Joint with your spouse, you are both equally responsible for every claim on the return, including any tax balance owed, by default. Innocent Spouse Relief is for taxpayers who filed a joint return with a spouse, or ex-spouse, who underreported income, claimed improper deductions, or otherwise caused a tax understatement without their knowledge. If you can show you didn't know — and had no reason to know — about the error, and that it wouldn't be fair to hold you responsible, the IRS may relieve you of some, or all, of the resulting tax, penalties, and interest. Strict deadlines and documentation requirements apply, so it's important to act quickly and get professional guidance to determine if you qualify.

Injured Spouse Relief

Injured Spouse Relief is different from Innocent Spouse Relief — it applies when your joint tax refund is seized to cover a debt that belongs solely to your spouse, such as past-due child support, federal student loans, state taxes, or other government debts you had no part in creating. If this happens, you may be entitled to reclaim your share of the refund, since you shouldn't lose money you're rightfully owed because of a debt that isn't yours. We help determine your allocated portion of the joint refund based on your individual income, withholding, and credits, and pursue recovery of that amount from the IRS. Whether the offset already occurred or you want to proactively protect a future refund, our team ensures the claim is filed correctly and within the applicable deadlines to maximize what you're able to recover.

IRS Notices

Not sure what your notice means? Don’t ignore it. We review your IRS correspondence, explain it in plan language, and respond for you correctly and on time.

Passport Certification Issues

The IRS can certify seriously delinquent tax debt to the State Department, which can result in passport denial or revocation. We can help you address the underlying balance and navigate the passport decertification process.

Missing or Misapplied Payments

Even when you've made a good-faith effort to pay your tax debt, the IRS doesn't always get it right. Payments can be lost, applied to the wrong tax year, split incorrectly across multiple liabilities, or credited to the wrong taxpayer entirely. These errors can be especially frustrating when they trigger new collection action, such as a lien or levy, over a debt you believed was already paid. Our team investigates these discrepancies and works directly with the IRS to correct your account, and ensure any resulting penalties or interest reversed.

Payroll Tax/Small Business Issues

Payroll tax problems carry serious consequences, including personal liability for business owners. We help businesses and responsible parties address payroll tax debt, Trust Fund Recovery Penalty (TFRP) assessments, Combined Annual Wage Reporting (CAWR) audits, and Employer Shared Responsibility Program assessments (ESRP).

Amended Returns & Other Tax Claims

If a prior return was filed incorrectly—or if you are owed a refund you never claimed—we can help you file the correct claims to ensure you aren’t overpaying, and you receive any refunds owed.

Decedent & Entity Tax Issues

When a taxpayer passes away with unresolved tax debt, the IRS can pursue the estate. Executors or personal representatives may face personal liability if estate assets are distributed before tax obligations are settled.

Similarly, corporations, partnerships, LLCs, and trusts carry their own tax liabilities separate from their owners, though in certain cases, such as unpaid payroll taxes, the IRS can hold individual officers, members, or responsible parties personally accountable.

Our team helps executors, heirs, and business owners navigate these often-complex situations, from resolving a decedent's outstanding tax debt and protecting estate assets, to addressing entity-level liabilities, dissolutions, and successor liability concerns. We work to identify who is truly responsible under the law and negotiate the best possible outcome, whether that means settling the debt, requesting relief, or limiting exposure for individuals who acted in good faith.

Get Your IRS Records

Sometimes a valuable step can be to request copies of internal IRS records through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). We can help to request records on your behalf and help you understand what they mean for your case.

Statute of Limitations

The IRS has statutes if limitations that dictate how much time you have to claim a refund, how much time the IRS has to assess you additional tax, and how long they have to collect a balance from you. Analyzing IRS statutes of limitations is an important part of our resolution strategy.
